GAMBIAN PRESIDENT BARROW FINALLY MOVES INTO OFFICIAL RESIDENCE. After 10 months in charge of The Gambia, President Adama Barrow has finally relocated to the official residence, previously occupied by former leader Yahya Jammeh.
The premises were deemed to be unfit for Barrow since Jammeh left with different reports stating that there were stash of arms and chemical weapons hidden there. The ECOWAS regional force took over the building at a point to ensure its safety before the relevant authorities set out to renovate it for President Barrow’s use. A local journalist shared photos showing Barrow’s arrival at the premises where a guard of honour was mounted for him.
Barrow, the then opposition coalition candidate, beat Jammeh in the December 2016 polls. Jammeh had called to congratulate Barrow but rescinded his decision few days later citing electoral irregularities.
Jammeh was still bent to hold on to the presidency seat until ECOWAS stepped in with Muhammadu Buhari-led mediation team. ECOWAS was readied to oust him when his mandate expired in January 2017. Mediation by Presidents of Guinea and Mauritania however managed to convince Jammeh to leave power and the country. |
